deck the oils

Back in January we had a deck put on the back of the house. We had looked at using a decking solution to the “getting into the house” dilemma but went with ramping the front instead. In the end, we got a deck to the back of the house as a nicety. In fact we got given the deck, by Decks by Design which was lovely. However the promised return trip to oil it and finish an unnecessary railing has not yet materialised.

So with nearly six months under its belt and a lot less use in colder months, dear friends took it upon themselves to offer the labour for the oiling party.

We needed:

  • a sunny few days for the deck to be dry before oiling and a sunny weekend.
  • two full days (or so we thought) for prep and oiling, amid four busy lives, and
  • the oil and equipment.

None of these came easy. The weather has been incredibly unpredictable but with “sad” rain for weeks. The break came this week and as I look out the window now, I see naught but blue skies. Thankfully this is also a long weekend.

So before lunch yesterday the couple iPumpkin and Mr iPumpkin arrived clad in outdoor work clothes and carrying stiff brooms. Thence with some shuffling to hardware shop iPumpkin had done some research earlier (including a call in radio show) and we had settled on Feast and Watson as iPumpkin has used it before. So armed with that, the only questions were; tinted oil or oil and stain and what colour. We agreed on tinted oil and PB and I had long agreed on the type of colour we were after, however the sales rep was so dis-interested and (re)tired I’m glad we had decided, before we looked at the colour options.

On reading the various can and bottle backs we discovered they want two days between cleaning and oiling- two sunny days. It is lucky that it is the Queen’s birthday long weekend here and luckier still that the Pumpkins were free. Yesterday’s work was washing. Tomorrows oiling.

Good luck with the oiling. Sorry about the Australia vs Germany result (soccer) and even more sorry about the England USA score.

It will be shoulder time soon?
