Tuesday tiny: the bells

Posted by willowdove on Jul 28, 2010 in What a girl believes, just life n times

While walking through the city yesterday heard out of context (and schedule) the bells of a nearby church doing a long peel. It was beautiful to hear, especially out of context. I can see why it is call to worship, amid a difficult week.

a night of chill

Posted by willowdove on Jul 26, 2010 in Music, Musings, politics, self

After watching the Federal government election debate online tonight (don’t get me started about how underwhelmed I feel at this point about this election despite my usual interest) I waited.

I was supposed to go to Melbourne again this last weekend, but once again couldn’t so spent most of the weekend, doing “workish” stuff and waiting. Trying to just chill a bit. Not entirely successful (as my Saturday 6 word entry indicates) I felt strange awkward and strangely alone. I wasn’t altogether traumatised by the feeling. Just trying to work out where I fit these days and how I feel about that. As well as what I actually enjoy and what I don’t.

Oh dear it sounds so morbid if you say it like that. It was a pleasant difficult but oh-so-honest ride. I’m glad I’m here now.
I listened to various musics; all good but none just right.

Then the gifts arrived from Melbourne, from the intensely practical thermal shirt, to another hat, to the incredible intense music of the band I was to travel to the launch of their album. Daquqi is helping me be.

I am lifted by their equation. I thanked her. I thank her again.

it’s all in the dollars

Posted by willowdove on Jul 20, 2010 in politics

In my view this is not the only way its hard to tell them apart.

Helpful reality check. Despite the vociferous debate between Joe Hockey and Wayne Swan about debt, stimulus, spending and who would be worse for the economy, AMP Capital’s Shane Oliver reckons there is little to differentiate the parties when it comes to the economic big picture. In a note out today, Oliver says: “The Federal election is unlikely to have a major impact on financial markets at an aggregate level. In fact, the historical record suggests little clear impact, with other factors proving more important. This may partly reflect the broad similarity in terms of macro economic policies between both sides of politics.”

Can you tell I’m bored yet? And its day 3 (officially) of the campaign.

Tuesday Tiny: old faithful

Posted by willowdove on Jul 14, 2010 in poodlyomic

I’m in the slow process of retiring my 7 year old wheelchair. This is the seed of a much bigger blog post soon, but in the meantime here is the old chair at the autumn of its service.

my current soon to be retired wheelchair

my current soon to be retired wheelchair has travelled literally with me since 2003

Well done good and faithful servant.

This is a hard process for me and incredibly personal, but today as i floundered a bit in a way too big hire chair I’ve been forced to hire as an interim measure because Paulette can’t get me to the corner store,it sstruck me how personal we get with our mobility devices. Indeed part of disability awareness training is “don’t touch the back of wheelchairs as they are an extension of the individual using them.

GTD plus one week — What I’ve learnt so far.

Posted by willowdove on Jul 13, 2010 in Organising me

Updated 1 pm 13th As I tweeted and wrote last week I did a re-implementation of GTD (Getting Things Done) the weekend before. Although I’ve used it somewhat over the last two years, it has been a bit haphazard so I decided a fresh implementation was in order.

I’ve now done my first real weekly review (there wasn’t a lot to review on Day 0); and I now feel clearer. I never got through assigning “Next Actions to the Projects in the List, so cracks were already beginning to appear, but that has been sorted now. After all, that is what the weekly review is for. I did a week, paper based (so others can “see” what’s on my radar). I like that logic, but until I get to actually go out and do the “buy printer ink“activity, it was fun to go back and use my old friend , OmniFocus. I know there is a risk with switching, but this morning I was excited to do some actions.

Some things I’ve learnt:

  • It is unfortunately still possible to avoid doing that which you don’t want to. This is not a magic bullet, but it means you can be more systematic and there are fewer highs and lows which is nice.
  • I tend to be blunter in my communications because I don’t have to decide what to say to Person, I tend to forget the niceties a bit. If the action is “Send Person a sms about coffee next week” My sms might read hi How’s thursday next week for coffee” then I might remember to ask how they are, or sign my name! Same goes with discussions in person, I show up with a list and off I go. Efficient, but less fluff. Ok for business but not so warming for loved ones.
  • On the flip side, I listen better
  • The Mind like Water thing is great.
  • I think being able to put social/life/relaxation stuff on the list and having it as important is so great.

A summary of GTD is here and the methodology is:

GTD is based on making it easy to store, track and retrieve all information related to the things that need to get done. Allen suggests that many of the mental blocks we encounter are caused by insufficient ‘front-end’ planning. It is most practical, according to Allen, to do this thinking in advance, generating a series of actions which we can later undertake without any further planning. The human brain’s “reminder system” is inefficient and seldom reminds us of what we need to do at the time and place when we can do it. Consequently, the “next actions” stored by context in the “trusted system” act as an external support which ensures that we are presented with the right reminders at the right time. Since GTD relies on external memories, it can be seen as an application of the scientific theories of distributed cognition or the extended mind.[1]

A vision or not

Posted by willowdove on Jul 8, 2010 in Disability Woes, Musings, media, poodlyomic

I did some googling and searching on YouTube for videos from Australia by people with disabilities. I came up sadly very short. Nothing really from a sense of community of disability here in Australia. I don’t think we have made the leap between sector and community; between political and social.  Both are necessary, but I fear that we are too busy fighting with both the politicians and sadly ourselves to share just thoughts.

So here are my “just thoughts”  on a recent trip to Melbourne, on seeing 18 people with apparent impairments, on inclusive process (ok I got a bit political) and on “drop jaw”.

The lighting is bad and my voice was not ideal, but this is my offering. It goes for 18 minutes (which means it is split on YouTube but in one piece here.

My thoughts on inclusion and access in Melbourne Australia from Joanna Nicol on Vimeo.

There may be others, if I can find the charger for the camera!

making me tingly

Posted by willowdove on Jun 29, 2010 in Organising me

I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a while. I have a friend coming up from down south for the day and while that will be lovely it isn’t what is getting me all tingly. No I’m going back to basics and getting “my affairs in order” In an non morbid sense and re-instating my GTD system. I used to be quite organised and systematic in my head and not so much in my body. I used to blame the one handed wheelchair user thing and perhaps that means I need to tweak my system. It shouldn’t mean that I can’t get organised.

Indeed till about three years ago I went through several highly organised “patches”. I want that back. One the most holistic systems that I used and loved was the highly googleable “Getting Things Done” methodology.

I’m going to try that again.

I was looking for a summary to send to my friend who is coming up to be my arms and legs for the day. I found this as a start..

I’ll work on it over the next few days and post an update when comments are back.

Oh julia

I want to believe that our first female PM can be reelected but I don’t know. We Aussies are good( the politicians at least) at putting women in the top jobs when there is a likely loss looming. Sacrificial lamb mentality.
